What Causes Dry Skin?

If you suffer from dry skin, this time of year when the weather starts to get colder is probably your least favorite season. Colder temperatures can exacerbate skin dryness and make skin red, itchy, flaky and even prone to issues like rosacea and eczema. These symptoms of dry skin aren’t great, but there’s one more problem that dry skin can cause: when your skin is dry and flaky, it loses its elasticity. That means you’ll be more prone to fine lines and wrinkles, and looking tired overall.

Is there anything you can do to combat these issues?

Dry skin has a number of causes, and usually shows up on our arms, legs, elbows, hands and elsewhere on the body as the top layer of our skin works overtime to keep in moisture and there isn’t enough moisture left to keep the surface layer from staying moisturized, notes How Stuff Works. The very top layer of our skin, called the epidermis, is supposed to trap moisture molecules from the environment and save them inside your skin. When your epidermis has everything it needs, it keeps your skin silky and smooth.

According to Everyday Health, there are a number of causes of dry skin, most of which have to do with the Dry Skinworld around you. During colder months, chilly temperatures can cause dry skin problems because the low temperatures cause the moisture on the surface of your skin to evaporate more quickly. This may seem counterintuitive, but winter tends to feature more dry air than the humid summer months, and with less moisture in the air, it can pull more water from your body. Wind is also harsh to your skin, and accelerates moisture lost. Cranking the heater inside achieves the same effect; you’ll be warm, but will only lose those moisture molecules even faster.

Long hot showers or baths can also cause dry skin, because they strip your skin of its protective oils that usually help to lock moisture in. The same logic applies to frequently washing your hands or using hand sanitizer.

All of these environmental factors may be hard to avoid during the winter months, but another leading cause of dry skin is easy to cut out of your life: harsh soaps and skincare products could be stripping your skin of healthy oils and causing it to dry out.
